There is a very pretty butterfly investigating the thistles here. It flutters amongst the thistle blooms in a carefree manner, presumably harvesting nectar as it goes. Of course, who knows what goes on in the mind of a butterfly? Perhaps the butterfly is thinking entirely serious thoughts. It might be focused on stirring up storms half a continent away by fanning its wings. Or perhaps merely daydreaming about what it might be like to be an ancient human philosopher. It certainly seems happy, though. Or at least it makes you feel happy to watch it. Which is not entirely the same thing, really. After all, as a wise man once wrote, "Loving nature is not the same as understanding it." In any case, the butterfly does not seem inclined to clarify its thoughts, so you will have to draw your own conclusions. Of course, eventually you are done looking at the butterfly... |
